Cosplay Hate

As some of you may be aware, for years I battled with an eating disorder, and it nearly took my life.
I had openly admitted this on my YouTube channel because I had a lot of concerned fans that were watching me disappear in my clothing.

The photo on the left was right before I was hospitalized. The photo in the middle was during my recovery and the photo on the right was when I gained 25 pounds after completing my healing process.

The reason I bring this up is, every single cosplayer you see on the screen is a person. A REAL person with emotions, troubles, feelings, just like you. It’s really easy to say, “She looks fat in that cosplay” or “She’s trying too hard”, and then log out. But that comment can really affect someone that is already telling themselves those hateful things repeatedly in the mirror every day. We don’t really know what a person is going through in every day life.

The hate/jealousy in the cosplay community needs to stop.

Also? Don’t EVER stop yourself from cosplaying because you may feel you’re too curvy, too thin, too old or too unattractive. Ever hear the saying, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder?” It means beauty is subjective. How many times have I told myself, “UGH IM SO UGLY” and then some random stranger tells me, Wow, you have a beautiful smile.

I have faith in you. I’ve accomplished the biggest battle of my life and of course I still struggle sometimes. (And there are times I WANT to give up.) But ultimately, what it boils down to is…do you love it? Do you spend time looking up cosplays, costumes, different prop making ideas? Is this something you REALLY want to try?
Then cosplay.
Try not to look at the number of fans you have or compare your skill level to others.
The hateful remarks will be there. The trolls will leave their bridges. But don’t tell yourself you can’t do something because you aren’t good enough. Because I’m telling you, you are.
